Corberan drops January hint amid ‘continuous talks’ with West Brom officials

West Brom look like they could make a few moves in next month’s January transfer window.

West Brom currently sit in 5th place of the Championship table.

Carlos Corberan is working wonders on the pitch despite various setbacks in terms of limited investments and a tough financial situation, with injuries a persistent source of pain for the Baggies too.

But next month looks set to be a big one for West Brom with noise surrounding a takeover growing; the suggestion is that owner Guochuan Lai could name his preferred bidder very soon, with a takeover potentially going through next month.

And that would be ideal for Corberan and the Baggies as they vie for January signings.

Given injuries, and given the fact that West Brom could now lose three players to AFCON; Semi Ajayi, Grady Diangana, and now Brandon Thomas-Asante, signings looks vital, especially signings in the attacking department.

Carlos Corberan ‘continuous talks’ with West Brom chiefs

Speaking to Birmingham Live ahead of this weekend’s Championship clash vs Middlesbrough, Corberan revealed that he’s in constant talks with Head of Recruitment Ian Pearce and Managing Director Mark Miles with regards to transfers.

He said:

“With me, working in this club, I have continuous talks with the people of the club. I work day by day with Ian Pearce and Mark Miles, talking specifically about players I work with Ian a lot. We share thoughts in the squad, in the growing of the players, in improvement, in the needs we can have.

“There’s not going to be a single day when we sit down and say ‘that one’. I know Ian and his people sit and work in a lot of markets and there are a lot of possibilities. When the moment arrives, we will see. What is our needs in that moment and our possibilities? We need to balance the two things.”

What could the Baggies’ January transfer window look like?

Given the ongoing takeover process, West Brom thoughts may largely be elsewhere, and understandably so.

But Miles and especially Pearce will be focused on transfers and on giving Corberan the necessary tools to guide West Brom to what would be an unexpected promotion this season.

Expect the loan market to be the main focus.

Takeover or no takeover, finances are tight at The Hawthorns and so loan signings looks like the likeliest outcome for West Brom next month.

But that’s not necessarily a bad thing. There’ll be a lot of Premier League clubs with talented youngsters looking for game time, and with West Brom performing well and playing a very contemporary way under Corberan, the club will surely be an attractive destination for a lot of these youngsters.

Again, attacking signings look like the most pressing thing for West Brom next month.

Journalist Lewis Cox has tipped the Baggies to sign a wide player, but with the news of Thomas-Asante potentially heading to AFCON with Ghana, a striker could now be the main focus with Daryl Dike yet to return from injury, and Josh Maja having just returned to the sidelines.

But Corberan continues to find a way to get points on the board and despite more setbacks on the horizon, many will still back the Baggies to claim a top six finish.
