West Brom announced Carlos Corberan as their new manager on the 25th of October 2022.

The Spaniard signed a two-and-a-half-year contract, keeping him at The Hawthorns provisionally until 2025.

Corberan left Huddersfield Town just three weeks before the start of the 22/23 season and then was sacked from his role at Olympiacos after just two games in August 2022. He quickly found his new role in football after two successful interviews with the Baggies.

West Brom had been without a permanent manager since October 10th 2022 when Steve Bruce was sacked before his arrival.

West Brom’s Carlos Corberan’s past coaching career

After retiring, Corberán subsequently started working at Villarreal’s youth sides as a fitness coach. In 2011, he was named fitness coach for the first-team squad.

In February 2012, Corberán signed for the Saudi Arabian team Al-Ittihad as a fitness coach, having been recommended by Pep Guardiola.

The next year Corberán was appointed manager of Alcorcón’s Juvenil A squad but was relieved from his duties and was replaced the following January.

He then returned to Saudi Arabia and joined Al-Nassr, named as Raul Caneda’s assistant.

On 29 November 2016, Corberán had his first senior managerial experience after being appointed in charge of Doxa in the Cypriot First Division, although he was sacked just two months later.

He stayed in Cyprus and was appointed the new head coach of Ermis, also in the Cypriot top tier. He was a little more successful here but only stayed till the end of the season.

On 21 June 2017, Corberán was announced as the new Leeds United under-23s manager. After the appointment of new head coach Marcelo Bielsa in June 2018, Corberán was promoted to first-team coach, as well as continuing his role as the head coach of the Under 23s.

In July 2020, Corberán then became head coach at Huddersfield Town, with the appointment confirmed on 23 July. He spent two years here, before in July 2022 resigning after a difficult campaign.

His worst managerial role was yet to come when he was made hard coach of Olympiacos on 1 August 2022. He was fired after two consecutive defeats in the Europa League group stage.

On 25 October 2022, Corberán returned to the English Championship, being appointed head coach of West Bromwich Albion, where he remains to this day hoping to make his mark on the club’s history,

Carlos Corberan’s playing career

Corberan had no significant playing career in football, enticed into the game through his love of coaching instead.

Carlos Corberan at West Bromwich Albion

Carlos Corberan’s first year in charge at the Hawthorns can be regarded as a success. The Spaniard managed a very respectful 9th-place finish in his first season at the helm.

He has made some excellent signings to the first-team squad, seems to have got the coaching staff in order at the West Bromwich Albion Training Ground and overall, looks to be steering the club in the right direction – which is hopefully the Premier League.

The Baggies have made a promising start to the 23/24 campaign… could promotion or a trophy be on the cards?
