The Telegraph journalist John Percy says there is ‘definitely progress being made’ on the West Brom takeover front, with the club hoping to have a deal done by January.
West Brom have been embroiled in takeover speculation for a long time now.
Current owner Guochuan Lai has become widely unpopular among the Baggies faithful for his poor running of the club, with Lai having previously taken a £4.95million loan from the club which is yet to be repaid.
To add to that, West Brom appear to be in a pretty dire financial position, having recently extended a £20million loan they took from MSD Holdings UK Limited in order to support ongoing ‘business operations’ at the club.
West Brom takeover latest
Providing an update on the club’s takeover process, Percy revealed on X this morning that progress is being made, and that the club hopes to have a deal concluded by January.
Percy tweeted:
And writing for The Telegraph, Percy reiterated that the current valuation of West Brom stands at around £30million, ‘plus the various debts and money owed in loans’ and that Lai remains ‘in talks with a number of parties over a potential sale’.
Percy also suggests that there are two front-runners in the takeover process; a Nigerian group and an American one.
Two front-runners as West Brom takeover talks gather pace
Very little is known about the front-runners at this stage, other than what Percy says above.
There’ll no doubt be NDAs in place which will keep their identities a secret for the time being, but as we get closer to January and closer to a potential takeover, we could find out one, if not both of the parties’ identities and their plans for West Brom.

A positive 2024 for West Brom and Corberan?
It feels like West Brom are a good owner away from being a Premier League team once again.
Carlos Corberan is working wonders on the pitch, getting the best out of his players, and overcoming issues off the pitch and numerous injuries.
And if the Baggies can secure some new funding for the New Year then Corberan could have some resources for the January transfer window, further bolstering his side’s chances of promotion.
It certainly looks like there’s positivity on the horizon for West Brom, who go up against current Championship leaders Leicester City at The Hawthorns this weekend.
