West Brom’s interim boss James Morison is fearful Mikey Johnston could be sidelined for an extended period after the winger limped off in the 2-1 defeat to Oxford on Saturday.

Just 20 minutes into the game, Albion’s main attacking threat was forced off after going down seemingly untouched.

Johnston had forced an early corner and looked likely to threaten Oxford as the game progressed. Despite at first trying to get to his feet and play on, it soon became clear the Republic of Ireland midfielder’s afternoon was over.

Speaking after the game, a dejected Morrison gave an update after Johnston was seen leaving the Kassam Stadium on crutches.

He said: “It was his ankle, he just got it stuck in the ground, I think. I’ll have to assess it, but it didn’t look good.”

Asked how if he was concerned this could be an extended injury, he added: “Yeah, but probably the way the season’s going, it probably would be bad.

“When you’re down there, you get no luck, do you?

“He had the shot, he got to the byline, he won us some corners, he took his man on. He nearly got in on the break with their last-ditch tackle from our clearance. He was a threat, and then you just lose him. He was a big miss.”

James Morrison praises Ollie Bostock

His replacement, Ollie Bostock was the only West Brom player to come out of the Oxford defeat with any credit from Morrison who did not hold back with his post-match comments.

The academy graduate hit back with a goal on the half hour mark, once again repaying Morrison’s trust like he did at Swansea in the FA Cup.

Morrison said: “I’m Really pleased for Ollie, he showed a great bit of confidence, probably the only one who could come out of today’s game with any credit.

“He’s deserved that, he’s been waiting all year for his chance and he’s took it, so I’m really pleased for him.”
