Craig Dawson makes West Brom jibe as he reflects on FA Cup reunion with Wolves

West Brom have enjoyed plenty of positive moments over the course of the season.

On the pitch, the Baggies are pushing for a place in the play-offs under Carlos Corberan.

That of course, will give them a shot at promotion back to the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Shilen Patel has recently completed his takeover of the club from Guochuan Lai.

Already, that has generated a more positive feeling around The Hawthorns, with the club’s new chairman more vocal with the support he is showing for the club in the early days of his reign.

However, one moment from this season that those connected with West Brom may not want to remember, is the FA Cup clash with Wolves at The Hawthorns.

It was a game that ended in a 2-0 defeat to their local rivals, and was heavily marred by crowd trouble.

Now though, it appears one man with links to West Brom who did enjoy that afternoon, was Craig Dawson.

West Brom hit by Craig Dawson dig

Dawson of course, is no stranger to the Baggies. The centre back spent almost a decade at The Hawthorns between 2010 and 2019.

During that time he made over 200 appearances in all competitions for West Brom, before leaving for Watford.

After a subsequent stint with West Ham, the 33-year-old joined Wolves in January 2023. That allowed him to return to The Hawthorns for the FA Cup tie earlier this season.

Now it seems as though getting that win against his former club is something that he relished.

Reflecting on that match with West Brom while looking ahead to Wolves’ FA Cup quarter final clash with Coventry City this weekend, Dawson told his club’s official website:

“We had a tough game at Brentford and then the joy of winning the game against West Brom, which was lovely, really good. It was great to go to the Hawthorns in a gold shirt and win – I really enjoyed it.”

Craig Dawson comments will sting

It is hard to imagine this statement from the defender going down well at all with Baggies fans.

West Brom gave him Dawson the chance to be a Premier League player for the first time in his career.

Indeed, they allowed him to experience the top-flight of English football for many years in the process.

As a result, the Baggies have certainly helped to progress his career. Beyond that, the defender may have been popular with many of those supporters, given how long he served the club for, despite the tension that surrounded his departure.

To hear him aim a dig such as this at West Brom, does feel somewhat harsh, and it may frustrate some of those at The Hawthorns.

That is particularly the case here, given who he was playing for at the time, and the events that unfolded on the day.

It will therefore be interesting to see if Dawson does issue any other comments relating to West Brom further down the line.
