West Brom should sign ‘talented’ free agent defender – Opinion

West Bromwich Albion are crying for a new central defender this window.

Cedric Kipre has returned from his loan spell at Cardiff City and failed to make an impression, with Semi Ajayi and Kyle Bartley the two favoured central defenders.

Boss Carlos Corberan should target former Manchester United centre-back Axel Tuanzebe as a potential option at the heart of the Albion defence.

The 25-year-old is a free agent after being released by the Red Devils at the end of last season.

He would be a good fit for a number of reasons, but mainly due to the fact the Baggies wouldn’t have to pay a fee for the former Stoke City loanee.

The ‘talented‘ Tuanzebe was highly rated at United, but his poor injury record saw him drop down the pecking order before his eventual release.

Would Axel Tuanzebe be a good fit for West Brom?

The 25-year-old has a vast amount of experience, playing for sides such as Aston Villa in the Premier League and Napoli in the Serie A.

He would bring needed youth but also experience to the ageing Albion backline, with Ajayi and Kipre the only other options under the age of 30.

The only potential downside to the move is his current injury record.

Tuanzebe has missed 233 days within the last two campaigns through various injuries, but there is hope that the worst of his bad luck is behind him.

With the defender being a free agent there is minimal risk, a one-year deal with the option for a further year would be ideal for both parties.

If he can get back to the levels he achieved for United, he would be a very shrewd addition for West Brom in the Championship.
