Jack Whatmough is now available on a free transfer, and West Brom need to make sure they’re in contention for his signature.

As reported by Darren Witcoop, writing on his Twitter page, Jack Whatmough is now a free agent, having been given permission to terminate his contract with Wigan Athletic.

Lots of Championship clubs will now be sniffing around Whatmough, and West Brom should act fast to put a contract offer on the table for the player to consider.

With transfer funds tight at the Hawthorns, the Baggies need to be able to capitalise on situations such as this. Bringing in Whatmough would add some quality strength in depth to Carlos Corberan’s defensive contingent.

Whatmough was in solid form for the Latics last season, and has previously impressed in League One for Portsmouth.

Former teammate Paul Robinson has been full of praise for Whatmough in the past, when the player left Portsmouth. As quoted by The News, he said of the centre-back: “he’s a really good player…I think he is an excellent League One defender. Perhaps the only reason he hasn’t gone to a higher level already is because of his injuries.”

The 26-year-old has now proven himself capable of shining in the Championship.

West Brom must take this chance to land Whatmough

West Brom now stand a chance to take advantage of Wigan’s struggles. Whatmough has been allowed to cancel his contract with the club after just two seasons, following contractual breaches on the part of Wigan’s former owners.

It is vital that West Brom continue to strengthen this summer. The recent arrival of Jeremy Sarmiento on loan from Brighton is an excellent start. However, much more work is needed. Signing Whatmough would be another big step in the right direction.

However, this is a deal that Albion will have to fight for. There will be plenty of clubs in the second tier keen to add the former England under-19 international to their ranks. Corberan must encourage the club to do all they can to get a deal done.
