Shilen Patel comments on Carlos Corberan sounds like positive news for West Brom

West Brom have had a mixed bag with managers in the past, but look to be in a strong position in that regard right now.

Back when he was appointed manager October 2022, Carlos Corberan took charge of a club languishing in the Championship relegation zone.

However, the Spaniard quickly turned that around, with the Baggies only narrowly missing out on a place in the top six that season.

The current campaign has now seen West Brom build on that under the 40-year-old. They currently sit 5th in the Championship table, and look well set to secure a top six spot this season.

That is even more impressive, considering the relative lack of backing he had in the transfer market this season, when the club has been owned by Guochuan Lai.

Indeed, it seems as though his success at West Brom has already secured another admirer for Corberan, in the form of the club’s new owner, Shilen Patel.

Carlos Corberan gets Shilen Patel verdict

With Patel having completed a long-awaited takeover of the club from Lai last month, the Baggies’ new chairman is keen to be involved with things at The Hawthorns.

As a result, he has shown an openess that West Brom did not see from his predecessor.

That includes an interview Patel recently gave to BBC WM, about a number of different aspects of the club.

One of those was Corberan, who the Baggies chairman described Corberan as being a ‘great fit’ for his team.

In the circumstances, that observation from Patel can surely only be seen as a positive by those connected with West Brom.

Comments a good sign for West Brom future

Whenever a new owner takes over a club, there is always some uncertainty about if and how they will look to put their stamp on it.

That can often lead to speculation over the future of the manager, and that was no different when Patel took over West Brom.

Indeed, there were even reports that the Baggies were lining up Ivan Juric to replace Corberan at The Hawthorns.

Obviously, that has not happened, and these comments from Patel suggest there is little chance that change will be made any time soon.

Surely, that can only be a good thing for West Brom. Corberan is working wonders right now, and evidently knows just how to get the best out of this squad.

To change it now would therefore be a gamble when there is so little time in the season remaining, and the play-offs are so close.

Doing so could upset the momentum that Corberan has built up during his time at the club, and risk them dropping out of the play-off places.

It could also be argued that the Spaniard deserves to show he can get more out of this side with the improved backing he should have under the ownership of Patel.

Beyond that, his popularity with the West Brom fanbase, means sacking the 40-year-old may not go down well. That in turn could create tension around The Hawthorns, causing an unwelcome distraction for the run-in.

With all that in mind, the fact that Patel looks set to stick with Corberan rather than twist with a new manager, can surely only be seen as good news for West Brom.
