Corberan should reward 28-year-old star with new deal after West Brom resurgence

West Brom have a number of players out of contract next summer, making for a potentially difficult 2024 for the Baggies.

West Brom are focussed on the Championship right now.

Carlos Corberan‘s side are performing well and they look like definite top six contenders in the Championship, despite their struggles with injuries and their ongoing financial predicament.

But expect the Baggies hierarchy and indeed Corberan to have an eye on next season; specifically next summer with the club having a number of players out of contract.

As it stands, Alex Mowatt, Cedric Kipre, Nathaniel Chalobah, Adam Reach, Matt Phillips, Tom Fellows, Erik Pieters, Martin Kelly, and Ted Cann are all out of contract.

Making a case for Mowatt…

There’s some key players on that aforementioned list; Phillips being one, Pieters is another key player too, but Mowatt may be one who the fans would love to see given a new deal.

He signed a three-year deal in 2021, following his former Barnsley boss Valerien Ismael to The Hawthorns.

It was a good signing and he started well, scoring a couple of long-range goals to set the bar high early on.

But Mowatt would struggle for consistency. He couldn’t hold down a regular place in the side and he was sent out on loan to Middlesbrough last season.

Now back at The Hawthorns, he’s thriving in Corberan system more suited to his attributes, having featured 14 times in the Championship this season with one goal and one assist to his name.

Mowatt has been in and out of the XI but features in most games; of late though, Mowatt has been in the XI more often than not.

Should Mowatt get a new West Brom deal?

West Brom have a lot of quality in midfield.

Names like Okay Yokuslu and Jayson Molumby were the first picks last season, and the fact that Mowatt is now starting, often at the expense of a quality name in Molumby, speaks volumes about the former Leeds United man.

He’s bided his time at West Brom and it’s not been easy given the changes in managers. But right now, Mowatt is well within Corberan’s plans after returning to West Brom unsure of what the future held for him.

Given West Brom’s problems off the pitch, there might not be new deals for everyone. The Baggies might have to release some big names in order to balance the books and so Mowatt’s future is not guaranteed.

But he’s still only 28 and he might have his best years ahead of him, and given how well the Baggies are doing, Mowatt would surely jump at the chance to stay another year or two at least.

If West Brom can, they should definitely extend Mowatt’s stay.
