West Brom earned a much-needed 1-0 win away at Birmingham City in the Championship today.

West Brom welcomed Midlands rivals Birmingham City to The Hawthorns today, with the Baggies looking to cement their place in the top six after an inconsistent run of form.

Before today, the Baggies had lost three of their last five, with the last being a 2-0 defeat at home to Wolves in the FA Cup fourth round.

That game wasn’t short of commotion with fan trouble leading the game to be delayed towards the end, and almost postponed.

And today’s goal-scorer Andi Weimann almost caused a similar ruckus after celebrating his winning goal in front of the Birmingham City fans.

But Daily Mail journalist Tom Collomosse was less than impressed with the former Aston Villa and one-time Wolves striker, posting on X:

The Austrian striker joined on loan from Bristol City last month, scoring a hugely important and memorable winning goal in his home debut for the Baggies.

Carlos Corberan will be delighted to see Weimann get on the scoresheet and to pick up three points against a Birmingham side who’ve proved drastically in the past few weeks.

But Weimann may now face criticism for celebrations today.

Baggies fans find a new hero, but criticisms may emerge

Collomosse certainly has a point; after such poor scenes at The Hawthorns last week, goading the Birmingham City fans as an ex-Villa player may not have been the smartest move from Weimann

But the goal, and maybe the celebration too, will make Weimann an instant hit with the West Brom fans; many of which doubted the club signing him on loan last month.

He remains a very dogged and bruising striker but still with a very good degree of technical ability, shown in glimpses today.

Weimann could quickly come into starting contention for the Baggies going forward, and with him And Brandon Thomas-Asante and Daryl Dike, then maybe Josh Maja at the end of the season as well, West Brom have a very potent set of striking options.

Up next for West Brom is a trip to Ipswich Town next weekend; the Tractor Boys will be extra geared up for this one after back-to-back defeats, losing 3-2 away at Preston North End today to d
