Tony Pulis explains how West Brom failed Eric Ramsay and Ryan Mason

Ex-West Brom manager Tony Pulis has questioned the “knowledge of the game” at the club in the wake of Eric Ramsay’s sacking.

Ramsay was sacked after just 44 days this week, where he failed to manage a single win in his nine games in charge since replacing Ryan Mason in January.

He failed to make any sort of impact at The Hawthorns and his miserable tenure drew comparisons with Wilfried Nancy’s reign at Celtic.

Nancy, a fellow MLS graduate, beat Ramsay’s record, lasting just 33 days at Celtic Park. Meanwhile, Will Still, who had previously plied his trade in Europe was sacked by Southampton winning just two of 13 games in charge.

Pulis watched over 121 games as West Brom boss and since retiring has spoken openly about offering advice to current managers in the game.

Speaking via his BBC Sport column, he explained how real experience would have helped Eric Ramsay and even Ryan mason before him.

He said: “Over the past few months, we’ve seen young coaches arrive from Europe and the United States to take charge of Southampton, West Brom and Celtic.

”Will Still, Eric Ramsay and Wilfred Nancy were all asked pretty quickly. All three had no experience of British football – yet they were left alone to manage in difficult circumstances. It makes me wonder: Who at each club made that decision?

”A lot of directors of football have never experienced management, and until you have actually sat in that hot-seat yourself, you don’t realise how difficult it is, or the pressure you put yourself under to succeed.

”Someone with any knowledge of the game, who had done the job themselves, would have provided those young managers with an experienced football man to help them through the initial period at their new club. So why didn’t that happen?”

West Brom fans only have to look back at some of the club’s most admired managers like Ozzie Ardiles who was assisted by Keith Burkinshaw and Gary Megson who was supported by the late Frank Burrows. Both had buckets of experience and this season has made it increasingly clear that experience is needed now more than ever.

It seems Bilkul Group are inclined to agree amid reports Darren Moore is being considered to support James Morrison who himself lacks experience as a head coach.
