West Brom beat Cardiff City 1-0 in the Championship tonight.
A second half goal from Jeremy Sarmiento earned West Brom a fifth win in six, with Carlos Corberan‘s side now sitting in 3rd place of the table and just seven points behind Ipswich Town in 2nd.
It wasn’t the Baggies‘ best performance of the season. But they claimed all three points and against a strong Cardiff City side too.
There seems to be a really good mood among the players and the fans right now and tonight’s goal will have also done Brighton & Hove Albion loan man Sarmiento a world of good.
The 21-year-old made a rare start tonight and scored what proved to be the winning goal.
He’s quickly become a well-liked player in the side, often making impacts from the bench but tonight showcasing what he can offer from the start.
Jeremy Sarmiento at West Brom so far
The Colombian has now featured 13 times in the Championship this season, scoring his second goal tonight.
He’s mostly been limited to substitute appearances with tonight’s fixture presenting Sarmiento with only his second start of the season so far.
The Brighton man has definitely shown glimpses of a very impressive player, but consistency has been missing, and it’s perhaps what’s kept Sarmiento out of the XI most weekends.

What’s been said?
After scoring the opening and winning goal of the night, Express & Star reporter Cox had this to say on X:
“An interesting player with undoubted quality. May frustrate in patches but a match-winner. Hopefully the case tonight.”
And that pretty much sums up Sarmiento at West Brom so far.
He’s another South American talent that Brighton have spotted and recruited and so he’s obviously a player with potential, with the Seagulls’ recruitment from South America in particular having been extremely impressive in recent seasons.
But he remains a player with a relative lack of first-team experience, especially so in England, and so it’s going to take time for him to really start to fulfil his potential.
But he’s shown West Brom fans enough for them to really warm to him and to realise that he’s someone who could yet play a key part in the club’s promotion push this season.
The Baggies don’t have too many names to deploy on the wings and so Sarmiento could be key when rotating other names like Grady Diangana, Jed Wallace, and Matt Phillips.
His performance and goal tonight will certainly give Corberan some food for thought going forward, with a home game vs Leicester City on the agenda this weekend.
