6/10 West Brom star was ‘energetic’ during international clash, but ‘lacked’ one thing

West Brom have undoubtedly benefitted from the January loan signing of Mikey Johnston in the second half of this season.

The winger joined the Baggies on loan from Celtic, and has made a major impact at The Hawthorns since then.

Johnston has scored six goals and provided one assist in nine appearances for Carlos Corberan‘s side.

That has helped West Brom to further cement their place in the top six in the Championship table.

It has now also seen Johnston handed another opportunity on the international stage for Ireland.

However, that seemingly led to some mixed opinions on the 24-year-old’s latest performance on Tuesday night.

Mikey Johnston friendly performance assessed

The on-loan West Brom winger had been an unused substitute for Ireland in their goalless draw with Belgium on Saturday.

However, he was handed a start in the subsequent clash with Switzerland on Tuesday, replacing the injured Chiedozie Ogbene.

Johnston played 57 minutes of that game before being withdrawn. During that time, the winger squandered one headed opportunity, and generated some mixed reviews for his efforts.

Writing about the West Brom man’s performance for Ireland, the Irish Independent said:

“Energetic at left wing but lacked end product in the final third. Should’ve done better when he sent a first-half header wide. Made way for Adam Idah.”

As a result, Johnston was given a rating of 6/10 for his latest showing on international duty.

According to SofaScore, the West Brom man did manage just a single shot, which was off target, during almost an hour on the pitch.

Beyond that, he attempted just one dribble, which was unsuccessful. Elsewhere, he recored a pass success rate of 71%, with 15 passes out of 21 completed. However, he did not complete any key passes.

Johnston also won only three out of seven duels he was involved in, and lost possession on nine occasions over the course of the match.

This therefore, does seem to have been a rather inconsistent performance from the West Brom man on Tuesday.

West Brom will still be confident in Mikey Johnston

Admittedly there can be no denying that this looks to have been a tough night for Johnston on Tuesday.

However, it is hard to imagine that this will cause too much concern for those watching on at The Hawthorns.

As has already been mentioned, the winger has been excellent for West Brom since he made the move to the club.

Indeed, he has shown on a number of occasions that he can come up with some vital goals and assists for the club.

The fact he has done that so consistently, means they will believe that he can continue to do that, once he returned to the club.

West Brom will therefore be hoping that Johnston can get back to his clinical club form when the action resumes on Friday afternoon, for such a crucial period of the season.
